Route Planner is a free tool for putting many stops in a good driving order. It works without an account, and we try to keep as little about you as possible. This page explains what happens to what you give it.
Addresses and stops
- Your stop list, route and drawn areas are saved in your own browser (local storage) so they're still there when you come back. They are not saved on our server. Clear all, or clearing your browser's site data, removes them.
- To put an address on the map, our server looks it up. It first asks the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder and, if that finds nothing, OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Those services receive the address text, not who sent it.
- To save time on repeat lookups, the server keeps a cache of results for up to 90 days. Each entry is stored under a one-way code made from the address, plus the map position and the matched place name. The address you typed is not stored in readable form.
- To plan a route, the server receives the map positions of your stops and works out the driving order. It doesn't keep them after answering.
Photos (members)
When a member uses Scan photo, the photos are shrunk in the browser and sent to an AI provider's cloud service, which reads the addresses and sends them back. We don't store the photos. The AI provider processes them under its commercial API terms, which don't allow it to use them to train its models.
Your location
Live location is off until you tap the location button, and your browser asks for permission first. Your position stays in your browser. It only leaves your device if you press Use as start, and then only as the map position of that one stop, the same as any other stop.
Cookies
We use one cookie, and only after a member signs in: it keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. There are no advertising or tracking cookies and no analytics.
Other services your browser talks to
- Map images load from OpenStreetMap's tile servers, which see your IP address and the part of the map you're viewing.
- The map library (Leaflet) loads from cdnjs, which is run by Cloudflare.
- Cloudflare sits in front of this site for security and delivery, so it sees your IP address and requests.
- Google Maps only if you open a route there with one of the Google Maps links.
- The donation page, if there is one, only if you click it.
Server logs and limits
To keep the free service fair, the server counts requests per IP address (or per member) in memory to apply hourly limits. Its logs record errors and failed member sign-ins, including the IP address for failed sign-ins. They don't contain your addresses.
What we don't do
We don't sell or share your information, show ads, or build profiles. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
